Guide

Expected loss calculator: plan your session cost in advance

The expected loss calculator helps you estimate how much a gaming session theoretically costs you on average. Instead of starting from wagering requirements, this tool starts from your budget, pace of play and RTP — a practical way to plan responsibly.

The expected loss formula

Formulas

Total wagered = average bet × rounds per hour × hours

Expected loss = total wagered × (100% − RTP)

Example: a two-hour slot session

Average bet €1, pace 500 rounds per hour, duration 2 hours, 96% RTP.

  • Average bet€1
  • Pace500 rounds per hour
  • Duration2 hours
  • Total wagered€1 × 500 × 2 = €1,000
  • House edge (96% RTP)4%
  • Expected loss€1,000 × 4% = €40

This €40 is the average theoretical cost — the actual result can be better or worse.

Why it helps with planning play time

If you know your expected loss, you can set a realistic budget and avoid chasing losses. A faster pace and a bigger bet raise the expected loss proportionally.

Tips

  • Set a loss limit before the session starts and stick to it.
  • A slower pace and a lower bet extend play time on the same budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the expected loss at a casino?
Multiply the total wagered by the house edge. You get the total wagered by multiplying the average bet by the rounds per hour and the hours.
Is the expected loss guaranteed?
No. It’s a long-term average. A single session’s actual result can be much better or worse due to variance.
How do you reduce the expected loss?
Play higher-RTP games, lower your bet or pace and set a firm loss limit. All of these reduce the theoretical cost per unit of time.
