RTP calculator: what the return percentage really means
The RTP calculator converts a game’s return percentage (Return to Player) into the house edge, theoretical return and expected loss. RTP shows how much of the money wagered is paid back to players over the long run — the rest is the house edge.
The link between RTP and the house edge
House edge = 100% − RTP
If a slot has 96% RTP, the house edge is 4%. That means for every €100 wagered the casino keeps €4 on average over the long run.
Total wagered €3,500 on a game with 96% RTP (4% house edge).
- Total wagered€3,500
- House edge4%
- Theoretical loss€3,500 × 4% = €140
- Theoretical return€3,500 × 96% = €3,360
The more you wager (for example during wagering), the closer the actual result moves to this theoretical loss.
Why the short-term result differs
RTP applies only to long play. In a short session the result can be much better or worse, because the variance of results (volatility) is high. The calculator shows an average, not a guarantee.
Tips
- Even small RTP differences (96% vs 94%) add up significantly over a large turnover.
- Check a game’s RTP on the provider’s info page — the same slot can differ between casinos.
