Expanding symbol

A slot symbol that expands to the full height of the reel when it lands, covering several positions at once.

Also: expanding symbol · expanding wild · expanding reel symbol

Definition

An expanding symbol is a slot symbol that, when it lands, stretches over the whole reel and fills every position on it. This way a single symbol takes part in several paylines at once.

The two most common forms are the expanding wild and the special expanding symbol of a bonus round. An expanding wild substitutes for other symbols across the whole reel. A bonus round expanding symbol is usually chosen at random at the start of the round and expands every time it lands, even when its instances are not on adjacent reels.

How an expanding symbol works

When an expanding symbol appears on a reel, the game checks whether expanding gives a win and extends the symbol over the whole reel. Wins are then calculated on all active lines. In games where every combination of adjacent symbols pays (such as Megaways), one expanding symbol can add many winning combinations at once. An expanding symbol can also be sticky or carry a multiplier.

What to check in the game's info menu

  • whether expansion always happens or only when it produces a win;
  • whether the expanding symbol appears in the base game or only in the bonus game;
  • whether the bonus round expanding symbol also pays on non-adjacent reels;
  • the game's volatility – bonus rounds with expanding symbols are often high-variance.

Common mistakes

An expanding symbol makes a single spin's potential large, but its frequency is already factored into the game's maths and does not change the RTP. Another misconception is that after several blank spins an expansion is "due". Every spin is independent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an expanding wild and a bonus round expanding symbol?

An expanding wild substitutes for other symbols. A bonus round expanding symbol is a normal paying symbol that expands and may also pay on non-adjacent reels if the game rules allow it.

Do expanding symbols raise a game's RTP?

No. Their effect is already factored into the game's RTP.

Guide

Expanding symbol – one symbol, a whole reel

An expanding symbol is a slot feature in which a symbol that lands stretches over the whole reel and fills every position on it. This way a single symbol takes part in several paylines at once and can make an ordinary spin considerably more valuable. In video slots familiar to Estonian players, expanding symbols appear both in the base game and in the free spins round, where they often play a central role.

There are two main types of expanding symbols. An expanding wild is a wild symbol that expands over the whole reel and substitutes for other symbols there. The other common form is the special expanding symbol of a bonus round: at the start of the round one regular paying symbol is chosen at random, and it expands every time it lands on the reels. In many games such a symbol can pay even when its instances are not on adjacent reels. In some games the expanding symbol is also sticky or carries a multiplier, which makes the bonus round's outcome swing even more.

In games where every combination of adjacent symbols pays, such as slots with the Megaways mechanic, a single expansion can add a large number of winning combinations at once. At the same time, the frequency and effect of expanding symbols are part of the game's maths and already factored into its RTP and volatility. They do not change the game's long-term return but affect how wins are distributed: bonus rounds with expanding symbols are often high-variance. Every spin is independent and the result is determined by a certified random number generator.

Before playing, it is worth checking in the game's info menu whether expansion always happens or only on a win, where the expanding symbol appears and how it pays. In Estonia, slot games may only be offered by casinos licensed by the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA), whose games are tested and whose rules are public. The game's demo version is a good way to get to know the mechanic.

Slot play is entertainment, not a source of income. Casino games in Estonia are only allowed for people aged 21 and over. Set yourself time and money limits, and if gambling starts to cause concern, help is available at peaasi.ee and tai.ee.
