The wheel in short
A wheel of fortune is the simplest game in the casino and, to watch, the most deceptive. You place a bet, the wheel spins, and a pointer stops on a segment. There is no decision at all — the whole game is the segment layout.
Which makes it a good place to learn to read segments. Unlike a slot, nothing is hidden here: every possible outcome is visible at once and the return can be worked out in a single line. Do it on one wheel and you can do it on every game-show wheel a live casino offers.
The wheel in this demo has thirty segments, of which twelve pay and eighteen do not. The full layout is below.

Two things jump out of that table.
First: six spins in ten pay nothing. Eighteen of thirty segments are blank. That is not a badly set wheel — it has to be that way, because the other twelve pay more than 1×.
Second: 1.2× is not a win. Seven segments pay 1.2×, which on a ten-euro stake means twelve euros — two euros of profit. The wheel plays its animation, a win sound fires, and the balance barely moved. Those seven segments supply 28% of the return, and they are why the wheel feels more generous than it is.
Where the 98% comes from
The calculation is one line: add up every segment's payout and divide by the number of segments.
10 + 5 + 3 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.2 × 7 = 29.4 and 29.4 ÷ 30 = 0.98.
So the house edge is 2%, and it applies to every spin regardless of what came before. For comparison: roulette is 2.7%, blackjack with basic strategy around 0.5%.
Why the 10× is not the thing to play for
The 10× segment supplies a third of the entire return but lands once every thirty spins. Which means your actual experience depends almost entirely on whether that one segment falls inside your session.

And even when it arrives, it is one 10× across thirty stakes — which is exactly what a 33% contribution means. The wheel owes you nothing after a long drought either: every spin is independent of the last (the gambler's fallacy).
How a real casino wheel differs
- Live game shows use more segments — often 52 or 54, which sharpens the distribution and raises the top end.
- Multiplier segments. Some wheels add a segment that multiplies the next spin's win. That raises volatility, not the return.
- Bonus rounds. On game shows a dedicated segment leads to a separate mini-game, and the return there is calculated across the whole chain, not the single spin.
- The return itself is usually lower. Game-show wheels typically sit at 95–97%, because top-end prizes are expensive to offer.
