Bonus rules players break by accident, and how to avoid it

Most voided bonus wins are not fraud but oversight: a bet too large, the wrong game, an expired deadline or a second account. What happens when a rule is broken and how to avoid it.

When a casino voids a win made with a bonus, it often feels unfair to the player. But it frequently turns out there was a rule the player did not notice: one bet was larger than allowed, the game was forbidden during the bonus, or the deadline had passed the day before. Most of these cases are not fraud or a deliberate attempt to game the system, just oversight.

This guide goes through the four rules most often broken by accident, explains what happens when one is broken and gives a simple checklist. At the end we also look at why these rules are linked to responsible gambling.

1. The maximum bet rule

The maximum bet rule is the most common reason a bonus win is voided. While a bonus is active, there is a largest allowed bet per spin or game round, for example €5. The rule exists so that a player cannot "gamble away" the bonus money on a few very large bets and quickly cash out the bonus on a big win.

How it is broken by accident:

  • The bet stayed high from the previous session. A slot remembers the last bet. If you played without a bonus at a higher stake last time, the new session starts at that stake.
  • Bonus buy. A bought bonus round is often counted as one large bet that exceeds the cap several times over.
  • Extra bets in table games. A side bet or doubling down in blackjack can push the total of one round over the limit.
  • The gamble feature. An attempt to double a win (the gamble feature) is forbidden during a bonus in many terms or counts as a bet.

One breach is enough. The casino does not have to prove that you gained an advantage: if the terms state that exceeding the cap voids the bonus and winnings, that is sufficient grounds.

2. Excluded games

Bonus terms almost always include a list of games that may not be played with bonus money or that do not count towards wagering. These are usually low volatility or very high RTP games, sometimes certain jackpot games and table games too.

There are two separate rules here that are easy to confuse:

  • Game contribution: the game is allowed but counts towards wagering at, say, 10% or 0%. This carries no penalty; it just slows down meeting the requirement.
  • A forbidden game: playing it during the bonus is forbidden by the terms. A breach may lead to the bonus and winnings being voided.

The biggest risk is playing a forbidden game without knowing the bonus is still active, for example when you have forgotten that a small bonus was left on the account.

3. Multiple accounts

Almost every casino has a rule of "one bonus per person, household, device or IP address". Breaking it deliberately is bonus hunting, and casinos take it very seriously. By accident it can happen like this:

  • A shared family computer or wifi. Two family members sign up at the same casino from the same home and both take the welcome bonus.
  • An old forgotten account. You once created an account you never used and now sign up again.
  • Another brand in the same casino group. At some casino groups the welcome bonus applies to the whole group, not to each brand separately.

At a casino with an Estonian licence, the account is tied to a person during the KYC check, so a second account is discovered at the latest at withdrawal. The usual result is voided bonuses and winnings, and often closed accounts. If you are unsure whether you already have an account, ask customer support before signing up. If family members play at the same casino, check in the terms whether the bonus applies per household.

4. Validity period and deadlines

Every bonus has at least one deadline, often several:

  • activation deadline: how many days you have to accept the bonus after depositing;
  • free spins use deadline: often 24 hours to a few days;
  • wagering deadline: within how many days the requirement must be met.

A deadline passing is not a "breach" in the sense of a penalty, but the result is the same: the bonus money and the winnings built up on it are lost. The most common situation is that a player takes a break, for example goes on holiday, and returns after the deadline has passed.

You can weigh the deadline against your wagering pace with the playthrough time calculator. If you see that meeting the requirement would mean several hours of play every day, that is a sign the bonus is not right for you.

What happens if you break a rule

The consequences depend on the casino and the rule, but typically:

  1. The bonus and the winnings made with it are voided. The most common consequence.
  2. The real money balance remains. Your own deposit is generally left untouched, unless it has already been lost in play.
  3. The account is closed. Mainly for multiple accounts or deliberate abuse of the bonus terms.

If you think the casino has misread a rule, ask in writing for the reason and a reference to the specific clause of the terms. Casinos with an Estonian licence are supervised by the Tax and Customs Board, and the text of the Estonian Gambling Act is publicly available in the Riigi Teataja.

Checklist before activating a bonus

  1. Find the maximum allowed bet in the terms and set it manually in the game right away.
  2. Write down the forbidden games and the games that contribute less than 100%.
  3. Put every deadline in your calendar.
  4. Check whether you or a household member already has an account at this casino or group.
  5. Check whether bonus buy and the gamble feature are forbidden during the bonus.
  6. If anything is unclear, ask customer support in writing and save the reply.

A responsible angle

These rules are not just legal small print. Several of them are directly linked to gambling behaviour. If you notice that you are exceeding the maximum bet because you want to wager "faster", or that you are playing longer than planned so the deadline does not pass, the bonus has started to steer your play. That is a good moment to stop.

A few practical steps:

Casino games in Estonia are allowed from the age of 21. If gambling worries you or someone close to you, you can find free and anonymous advice at peaasi.ee.

One bet too large can cost the whole win

The maximum bet rule applies to every single spin. Set the stake manually at the start of the bonus, and do not use bonus buy or the gamble feature during the bonus unless the terms allow it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a casino void winnings because of one bet that was too large?

Yes, if the terms include a maximum bet rule and state that exceeding it voids the bonus and winnings. That is why it is worth checking the stake manually at the start of the bonus.

What is the difference between an excluded game and a low contribution game?

A low contribution game is allowed but counts less towards wagering. Playing an excluded game during the bonus is forbidden and can lead to the bonus being voided.

Can family members get a bonus at the same casino?

That depends on the terms. At many casinos the bonus applies per household or IP address. Check the terms or ask customer support before signing up.

Do I lose my deposit when the deadline passes?

Generally not. The bonus money and the winnings built up on it are lost. If the deposit has already been lost in play, it cannot be recovered.

Where can I turn if I disagree with the casino's decision?

First to the casino's customer support in writing, asking for a reference to the clause of the terms. Casinos with an Estonian licence are supervised by the Tax and Customs Board.

Can you finish wagering before the deadline?
